Cuba: PARAWIFI. London Design Biennale

Cuban Project for the London Design Biennale 2016
(September 7-27, Somerset House, London, UK)

Cuba sits on the cusp of a digital revolution, and designers Luis Ramirez and Michel Aguilar want ‘humanize both the internet and the city’.

Instead of the country’s 135 Wi-Fi hotspots, where the smartphone user has to stand or sit on the kerb and other makeshift street furniture, they propose clusters of pods in which users can sit and relax as they plug into alternative realities.

These could be equipped as recharge station, vending machines, and could even have their own intranet with a virtual library of music, books and other educational services.
